Mariners Daily 3/4

By Emerald City Sports

After dropping a game yesterday the Mariners got back to their winning ways today, defeating the Colorado Rockies 4-3. Yovani Gallardo had a fantastic game which was good to see because he really struggled in his first start of the spring. Gallardo went 3.0 innings allowing just 1 hit while striking out 3 and showing the M's and their fans exactly what they wanted to see. The Mariners used 3 different starters today and after Gallardo was James Paxton who unfortunately made a mistake with a slider and it ended up costing him. Paxton went 2.0 innings allowing 3 hits and 2 earned runs while walking 1 and striking out 2. Chris Heston, the other starter, went 2.0 innings allowing just 1 hit and no runs. On the offensive end Mike Zunino hit a solo homerun and Zach Shank drove in 2 of the Mariners runs.

Outside of Zunino and Shank, Leonys Martin, Nelson Cruz and Dan Vogelbach all recorded hits in today's game. Cano and Segura also played today but they weren't able to record any hits and were a combined 0-6 and Segura had 2 strikeouts. The presumed starters for the Mariners like Cano, Cruz and Segura have been seeing a lot of at bats early in spring because they will be leaving camp to join their National teams. Tomorrow should be the last day we see some of the standard starters like Cruz, Segura, Cano, Felix and other because the World Baseball classic starts on Monday.

Some good news to report from the Mariners is that Mike Freeman cleared waivers and was assigned to the Tacoma Rainiers (AAA Mariners affiliate). This is good news because Freeman is a good, young player who plays hard and the Mariners wanted to keep hold of him after they had to remove him from the 40 man roster to create room for Chase De Jong who was acquired in a trade between the Mariners and Dodgers earlier this week.

Tomorrow the Mariners have split squad action, this is where the Mariners will split up to form 2 teams and will play 2 different teams simultaneously.  This first game for the Mariners will be against the Los Angeles Dodgers at 12:05 PM PT at Camelback Ranch. Andrew Moore will get the start for the Mariners and youngster Julio Urias will start for the Dodgers. Felix Hernandez will start in the 2nd game against the Oakland Athletics at 12:10 PM PT at Peoria Stadium. Hernandez will make his last start before he joins team Venezuela in the WBC, and he will be opposed by the Athletics' Jharel Cotton. Scott Servais hasn't announced which players will be on which teams or if the starters will all play on one team while the backups and invites play on the other, but we will find out tomorrow. The first of the games against the Dodgers is not available on TV or radio, however the game against the Athletics will be the first broadcasted game this spring for the M's. You can catch Felix and the M's on TV on ROOT Sports NW or listen to them on 710 ESPN Seattle Radio.
