Mariners Daily 3/8

By Emerald City Sports

Well unfortunately the off day yesterday didn't help the Mariners with their game today as they lost 14-6 in a sloppy game that featured some pretty bad pitching as well.

3 different errors really hurt the M's who gave up 6 unearned runs today. The errors obviously didn't help, but the pitching wasn't that great either, starting with James Pazos. Pazos allowed 5 runs, 4 earned on 4 hits while striking out 2 through 1 inning. Pazos had pitched pretty well up until this point, so it's unfortunate that he had a bad game, but it is spring training and there is always room for improvement. After Pazos was Ryan Weber who pitched 1.2 innings allowing 4 runs, 0 earned on 2 hits while walking 1 and striking out 1. At this point in the game Pazos and Weber had given up 9 runs but only 4 were earned. Following Weber was Zac Curtis who lasted only 0.1 innings because he allowed 5 runs, all earned on 4 hits, 1 walk and 1 strike out. Curtis allowed 2 home runs, one of which was a Grand Slam and currently has a 40.50 ERA, hopefully he can improve in his next appearance.

On the bright side, there was some good pitching performances today. Iwakuma started the game, going 2.0 scoreless innings allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 2. Ariel Miranda followed Iwakuma, and Miranda had another great showing as he pitched 1.0 innings of scoreless and hit-less baseball while striking out 2. Later in the game, Tyler Herb, Casey Fien and Dean Keikhefer all pitched 1 innings and none of them gave up any runs while they combined for 4 strike outs and only 2 hits.

Offensively the Mariners started slow but eventually got a little momentum, but it was too little and too late. Seager and Martin had good days at the plate, and Haniger checked in with a hit as well. Problem was the Mariners waited too long to gets there hits, because almost halfway through the game the M's only had 1 hit and were trailing 5-0.

Tomorrow's game is against the Chicago Cubs at Sloan Park at 12:05 PM PT. James Paxton will make his first start of spring and he will be opposed by former Mariner Mike Montgomery. The M's game will be available to listen to on 710 ESPN Seattle Radio but it will be delayed. MLB.com should have a live radio broadcast though.
