Toronto, ON - Two crucial points will be on the line Monday night as the Toronto Maple Leafs (21-14-9) host the Calgary Flames (24-22-3) at the Air Canada Centre. It will be the only time this season that the Flames will make a trip to Toronto.
The Leafs are coming into tonight's game looking to split a 4 game home stand after a tough shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators Saturday night, their second loss in a row.
Calgary will be coming into tonight's game looking to avenge a tough 7-3 loss on home ice to the provincial rivals Edmonton Oilers also on Saturday night.
The Leafs lost their game against the Senators after surrendering the game tying goal with a mere 1:11 remaining in the third period. Both teams had plenty of chances in the OT period but Ottawa would go on to win 3-2 in the shootout.
The Leafs are now just 1-6 in shootouts this season. "Its almost like going to the judge. It's a bit of a tough way to lose, but nothing you can do about it" said Leafs center Nazem Kadri following the loss.
The Leafs began the home stand by defeating the Buffalo Sabers 4-3, a game which seen top defenseman Morgan Rielly injured. They have since lost to the New York Rangers and of course Ottawa.
Things began going wrong from the beginning for the Flames against the Oilers as Edmonton had a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the first.
A bright spot for the slumping flames (4-5-1 last 10), Sean Monahan extended his 10 game point streak in the loss to Edmonton.
The last time these two teams met up was November 30th at the Scotiabank Saddledome with the Falmes coming out on top by a score of 3-0 with Chad Johnson stopping 39 of 39 shots. Former Leaf Jhonas Enroth was hooked with the loss in the game.
Puck drop is set for 7:30 EST.
Frederik Andersen (Toronto) and Brian Elliot (Calgary) will get the start in goal tonight for their respective teams.
