Best Pro Baseball Team P28 : The Boys of Summer are Still in 1887
The Delta-Echo-Foxtrot Challenge was continuing onward, but they were getting pretty close to the finish line. The DEF Challenge was between three different groups to determine who was 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the Group Standings due to a game played in the Tournament of Champions which created a non-cogent scenario, were the groups according to the numbers were not in the proper sequence. Group Echo had nine teams make it to the 2nd Round, but with two games to go, three teams making it to quarter-finals and one was from a bye (the 1874 Philadelphia White Stockings). The other two were the 1872 Troy Haymakers and the 1886 St. Louis Browns. Group Delta and Group Foxtrot had only two teams make it to the Quarter-Finals, but both groups only had four teams to make it out of Round 2. For Delta it was the 1878 Chicago White Stockings and the 1885 New York Giants and for Foxtrot it was the 1873 Boston Red Stockings and the 1874 Brooklyn Atlantics. In the Group Standings, Delta led Foxtrot 19-10, but trailed Echo 27-23. Echo trailed Foxtrot 33-32, so one can see why they were still playing. Group Echo was the closest to sealing the deal, but Delta and Foxtrot would be just fine with the Challenge continuing to Part 4. All Echo had to do was was to win two games against Foxtrot and then "hold service" for the rest of the Challenge and they would earn 2nd Place behind Group Alpha.
Game 23 was played on 6-19-1887 and was between the 4E 1887 Detroit Wolverines and the 1F 1886 Chicago White Stockings. There was real world data to input into the formula. The next game on the list was a game played on 5-6-1886 when the White Stockings won 5-1. The Chicago White Stockings won 12-4, Foxtrot now led Echo 34-32, but trailed Delta 19-10. Game 24 was played on 6-20-1887 and was between the 1D 1882 Chicago White Stockings and the 3E 1873 Philadelphia White Stockings. The real world data for this game could not be drawn from 1873 because the Chicago White Stockings did not play and all the games from 1874 were already used. The information came from a game played on 6-26-1875 in which Philadelphia won 4-3 so this was included into the formula. Chicago overcame the deficit and won 12-11, Delta now trailed Echo 27-24, but led Foxtrot 19-10. The Quarter-Finals schedule was determined randomly and by seed and here was the schedule : 11F 1873 Boston Red Stockings at 8E 1872 Troy Haymakers, 9F 1874 Brooklyn Atlantics at 4D 1878 Chicago White Stockings, 7E 1886 St. Louis Browns at 3D 1885 New York Giants, and 1D 1882 Chicago White Stockings at 2E 1874 Philadelphia White Stockings with the bye going to the 1F 1886 Chicago White Stockings.
Game 25 was played on 6-21-1887 and was between the 11F 1873 Boston Red Stockings and the 1872 Troy Haymakers. Troy only played between 1871 and 1872. These two teams had only played three times in the 1872 Season, so there was not any real world data for this game and only offensive and defensive parameters determined the final score. The Haymakers won 8-4, all Red Stocking teams were eliminated from the Challenge, Echo only trailed Foxtrot by one game 34-33, and lead Delta 27-24. Game 26 was also played on 6-21-1887 and was between the 9F 1874 Brooklyn Atlantics at the 4D 1878 Chicago White Stockings. The real world data for this game came from a game played on 7-27-1874 when the White Stockings won 14-2. The White Stockings won 12-9, Delta led Foxtrot 20-10, but trailed Echo 27-24. Game 27 was also played on 6-21-1887 and was between the 7E 1886 St. Louis Browns at the 3D 1885 New York Giants. These two teams were from different leagues and did not play in a World Series together until 1888, so only o/d parameters determined the final score. The Giants won 13-9,Delta now trailed Echo 27-25, but led Foxtrot 20-10.
Game 28 was played on 6-22-1887 and was between the 1D 1882 Chicago White Stockings and the 2E 1874 Philadelphia White Stockings. All the games from 1874 were already used. The real world data came from a game played on 7-26-1875 in which Chicago won 5-1 so this was included in the formula. The Philadelphia White Stockings overcame the deficit and won 11-5, Echo now led Delta 28-25, but trailed Foxtrot 34-33, the 1874 Philadelphia White Stockings increased their seed rating (more on this later) to 0, and the 1882 Chicago White Stockings fell to -1. There was only one Foxtrot team left, so the best Echo could do is tie Foxtrot 34-34, so there would be a Part 5 for the Challenge. The schedule for the Semi-Finals was determined and here were the match ups : 8E 1872 Troy Haymakers at 4D 1878 Chicago White Stockings and the 2E 1874 Philadelphia White Stockings at the 3D 1885 New York Giants, with 1F 1886 Chicago White Stockings receiving another bye. The X-ray Title was definitely up for grabs.
