Top Five Potential MLS Landing Spots for Brad Guzan
U.S. Men`s National Team goalkeeper Brad Guzan has reported interest in coming to MLS. I`m sure that there is some interest in coming to the league after seeing the success that Tim Howard has had. In the past I was skeptical of giving a goalkeeper a designated player spot and money. After seeing the impact that Tim Howard had on the Rapids second half o the season and in the shootout against the Galaxy I`m becoming more accepting of the idea (still not crazy about it). If Guzan does end up in MLS where could he land?
5. Philadelphia Union
It seems weird to have the Union on here since they have the reigning MLS goalkeeper of the year in Andre Blake. But there is report of the Union selling Blake to a team in Europe. If the Union do sell Blake then they are in the market for a goalkeeper to replace him. The Union have two designated player spots filled already in Maurice Edu and Alejandro Bedoya. I don`t see this as Guzan`s likely landing spot because Blake is still on the roster and because Bedoya was picked up last season as a designated player.
4. Atlanta United FC
It has been reported that Atlanta United FC is close to acquiring Sean Johnson from the Chicago Fire. At this moment in time Johnson is still on the Fire. I don`t like to assume that deals are a definite so I was thinking about this as if Atlanta United FC doesn`t have Sean Johnson. Atlanta needs a starting goal keeper and for a new expansion team what a better starting piece than Brad Guzan. Guzan would give immediate stability to the defense in the fact that he`ll be a vocal leader with talent in net. Atlanta hasn`t signed a DP yet and they would have the money and allocation spot to get him.
3. Minnesota United FC
Minnesota United FC is in a similar spot to Atlanta. The only reason why I have Minnesota at 3 and Atlanta at 4 is due to the Sean Johnson rumor. But Minnesota is an expansion team in need of any talent. On their roster they only have two centerbacks. If they want to solidify their defense early than signing Brad Guzan could be huge. I`m not sure if Adrian Heath and Minnesota will want to spend the money on Guzan but personally I would love to see Guzan lead this team in net.
2. Chicago Fire
The Chicago Fire are an interesting choice here. They have been abused in missing out on DP`s lately with Jermaine Jones, Didier Drogba, Alejandro Bedoya, and probably many more. Guzan is a native of Illinois and would probably like to return back home. It would take Guzan to buy into the Chicago Fire`s system however. I`m not sure if he would want to sign with the worst team in MLS over the past few seasons. There has also been reports on the Fire attempting to sign Bastian Schweinsteiger from Manchester United. Would the Fire want to spend their money on Guzan or Schweinsteiger? We will have to see.
1. New York City FC
NYCFC has had the big name attacking players in their history and when looking at their roster still have plenty of capable attackers. What this current NYCFC roster needs is a goalkeeper that can play behind Brilliant, Chanot, Allen, and Mataritta, and add some stability. NYC has the money, has the big city appeal, has the club appeal, and also has an open DP spot with the departure of Frank Lampard. I think this would be the best spot for Guzan to land to in MLS.
