He led the University of Minnesota football team back from obscurity. But as of the first thing Wednesday morning the non-stop battles with his help became too much.

Golden Gophers football coach Jerry Kill announced Wednesday morning he was retiring from football due to health reasons. Effective immediately. His long time assistant, Tracy Claes will take over through the end of this season.

Kill had battled problems with epileptic seizures throughout his tenure at Minnesota. He missed a large part of the 2013 season with Claeys finishing things up that season as well.

He (Kill) leaves the Gophers with a 29-29 record in his four seasons. He led the team to bowl games the past 3 seasons and was 2014's Big Ten Coach of the Year.

Minnesota is 4-3 this season and they play the University of Michigan on Saturday.
