Cam Newton admits fear of injury is why he didn't recover fumble

In one of the most shocking sports related things I ever heard, Cam Newton has admitted he didn't jump on his 2nd fumble during the Super Bowl, because he was trying to avoid injury. Cam Newton had the following to say on the Panthers exit day media session which he has skipped every other year.

I don’t dive on one fumble because the way my leg was — it could have been [contorted] in a way,” Newton said. “OK, you say my effort. I didn’t dive down. I fumbled. That’s fine. But we didn’t lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that.”

I have to give kudos to Cam Newton for admitting he didn't dive on the fumble because he didn't want to get hurt. Most people would not be that honest in that situation. The reason I was shocked that Cam didn't try to make a play due to fear of injury is that he IS so tough.

There are few NFL players much less quarterbacks who are tougher than Cam Newton. He puts his body on the line all the time for the team and had to be talked it sliding on some of his runs. I don't think Cam choked in the Super Bowl, I think he had his will to compete beaten out of him by a great Broncos defense.

I won't lie, I was mad as heck at Cam Newton at first over that play. I think we need to just try to forget it and hope for the best. Not that Falcons and Saints fans will let us forget it but we would do the same if their QB did this. The other players don't seem to bothered by Cam. They were singing and chanting "We Love Cam" to the media.
