The Carolina Panthers have traded defensive end Kony Ealy and a third round pick to the New England Patriots for a 2nd round pick. This was clearly the Panthers wanting to dump clear some cap and open up a roster spot.

The Panthers only moved up 8 spots from the 72nd pick to the 64th. Kony Ealy had one of the best Super Bowl performances ever in the loss to the Broncos. Unable to do much last year Ealy is in his contract year now and will probably have 10 sacks for the Patriots. Bill Belichick brings out the best in veteran players.

People are saying that the signing of Julius Peppers by the Panthers made Ealy expendable. I don't think that is the case Pepper is an aging pass rusher coming home to end his career. Ealy was supposed to be a full time stud defensive end and it didn't work out.
