"The Stack" 10-23-17

Ezekiel Elliott had three touchdowns as the Cowboys torched the 49ers 40-10.

I don’t recall the last time seeing four shutouts on an NFL weekend like we did on Sunday. I’m sure there is something out there regarding the number of shutouts in a weekend. There weren’t a lot of good games, but we had a couple out there so let’s get right to it and get right to the week 7 Sunday NFL reaction in “the stack” for today, Monday, October 23rd:

Bills 30 Bucs 27

Didn’t expect Jameis Winston to play as well as he did in this one. Yes he had an interception and a fumble, but he was a big reason why the Bucs had the lead. Unfortunately for the Winston and the Bucs defense, Bills running back LeSeah McCoy picked a good time to score his first touchdown of the year. He had two in the game and the Bills are 4-2 and 3-0 at home this year. Amazing things going on in Buffalo.

Bears 17 Panthers 3

Chicago Bears cornerback Eddie Jackson had a game to remember with a 75-yard fumble return for a touchdown and a 76-yard interception return for a touchdown. They didn’t even need Trubisky to do anything. In fact, Trubisky threw the ball just seven times. The Bears defense did the rest, frustrating Cam Newton and the Panthers offense in route to the easy victory. Frustrating times for the Panthers.

Titans 12 Browns 9

Neither team played well in this one. DeShone Kizer left the game with an injury. Wonder if that party he was at until the wee hours of Saturday morning had anything to do with it. Either way, the Browns struggled and the biggest news out of this one is that left tackle Joe Thomas suffered an injury that caused him to have his ten thousand consecutive snap streak snapped. He may not even play next week with a triceps injury. The Titans were disappointing, but they got the win and that is all that matters.

Saints 26 Packers 17

Datone Jones may want to get out of the . Packers quarterback Brett Hundley may very well have a great career, maybe a hall-of-fame career, but he struggled mightily on Sunday. He threw for 87 yards and though he did rush for a touchdown, had it not been for Aaron Jones, the Packers offense would have been absolutely dreadful. Drew Brees overcame two first half interceptions and put the game away with a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter. Mark Ingram is running well too. The Saints are playing really good football right now.

Jaguars 27 Colts 0

No Leanord Fournette? No problem for the Jaguars who had Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon each rush for touchdowns. The story in this one though was Blake Bortles and the Jaguars defense. Bortles threw for over 300 yards and was very accurate for the most part. The defense had ten sacks. Ten!! That is the second time they have done that this year. The Colts are bad and the Jaguars are now 4-0 in odd numbered weeks this year.

Rams 33 Cardinals 0

A close game took a drastic turn when Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer injured his arm and left the game. He has a broken arm and is out minimum eight weeks. The Cardinals seemed deflated after that. They also couldn’t stop Todd Gurley. The Rams defense was very good as well. This Rams team is legit.

Dolphins 31 Jets 28

Josh McCown was playing great for the Jets. They had a fourteen point lead in the fourth quarter only to see Matt Moore, replacing an injured Jay Cutler, and the Dolphins offense come storming back. Jarvis Landry had a big reception. Kenny Stills had a touchdown. Then an explicably bad throw by McCown was intercepted and the Dolphins would kick the game-winning field goal. Big win for the Dolphins. The Jets continue to play better than many expect them to.

Vikings 24 Ravens 16

Don’t let the final score fool you. The Vikings were the much better team in this one. Kai Fortbath in particular was outstanding. He made six field goals for the Vikings including two that were over 50 yards. Latavius Murray ran for over 100 yards and scored his first touchdown as a Viking and the defense teed off on Joe Flacco. A touchdown on the final play of the game for the Ravens was truly a garbage time touchdown. That offense is in trouble.

Cowboys 40 49ers 10

There were a lot of empty seats at Levi Stadium for this game. 49ers fans are fed up. They didn’t miss much in this one. Ezekiel Elliott ran all over the Cowboys and even caught a 72-yards touchdown reception (he had two rushing as well) as the Cowboys obliterated the 49ers. The Cowboys defense absolutely lit up rookie quarterback. C.J. Beathard. This was not a good game for the 49ers at all.

Steelers 29 Bengals 14

What an entertaining first quarter-and-a-half with each team scoring two touchdowns. After that, the Steelers defense stood strong and they would take down the Bengals with a 29-14 victory thanks to five field goals by Chris Boswell. The Steelers are starting to look like the Steelers we thought we would see from the get-go this season.

Chargers 21 Broncos 0

It’s time to start giving the Los Angeles Chargers some love (myself included). Their defense handled the Broncos ineffective offense. It should be panic time in Denver for the Broncos. Their offense can’t do anything, especially when running back C.J. Anderson can’t get going.

Seahawks 24 Giants 7

The Seahawks started out slow, but Russell Wilson picked it up in the second half throwing three touchdowns as the Seahawks got by the offensively challenged Giants. The Seahawks did what they had to do. Win and keep pace with the Los Angeles Rams.

Patriots 23 Falcons 7

The rematch of last year’s Super Bowl went much like the second half did for the Falcons. Their offense seemingly disappeared and in the heavy fog in the second half, the Patriots put the Falcons away. If it wasn’t for a late touchdown in the fourth quarter, the Falcons may have been shut out. Their offense is in desperate need of finding themselves and quickly.

Washington @ Philadelphia Eagles 8:30 PM ET ESPN MNF

The Eagles are the lone team in the NFL with just one loss. Think about that for a second. Carson Wentz and company are playing incredibly well right now. Washington is a good team and Kirk Cousins is playing good football right now. It isn’t going to help though in this one. I’m still a little hesitant in declaring the Eagles the best team in the NFC, let alone the NFL, but they are the better team in this matchup.

Prediction: Eagles 27 Washington 20

Coming up Tuesday: MNF reaction, World Series thoughts, college football reaction and more.
