Bucs fire DL coach
Early on Sunday the Buccaneers announced that they have fired DL coach Jay Hayes. This comes as a bit of a surprise as Dirk Koetter said at his year end press conference that he was not expecting any changes to the coaching staff and as far as he knew everyone would be back in 2018.
The Bucs were only able to register 22 sacks all season, one of the lowest totals in Bucs history and had problems all season getting consistent pressure on the QB. Someone had to pay the price and that just happened the DL line coach Jay Hayes. No Bucs player has had more than 10 sacks in a season since Simeon Rice in the 2005 season.
Hayes is a well respected coach around the NFL. Before coming to Tampa, Hayes coached the DL in Cinncinnati for 13 season and had a lot of success. Hayes had been in Tampa for just two seasons and once Noah Spence was put on IR for the season and Jacquies Smith was put on waivers he did not not have a lot to work save for All-pro Gerald McCoy and Clinton Mcdonald who gave a good effort every game.
No replacement has been named yet for Hayes.
