Welcome back Goggles Bertram...

Winner senior, Trevor Bertram returns for a Winner team ranked No. 5 in Class A boys basketball.

For all of the success the Winner football program is, has, always has, this going-to-state in basketball thing is becoming quite a habit for coach Brett Gardener and the Winner Warriors. It's hard to ignore just how good Winner has been over the past few season, with back-to-back trips to the state tournament. The 2015 team was terrific and the 2016, nearly as good as they put together that historic run to get to the dance.

Well, football season is over, time to welcome in the 2016-2017 team as Winner opens it's season tonight in Wagner....Lady Warriors, ranked No. 3 in Class A, also open their season in Wagner tonight.

Couple of big losses for Winner from a season ago. Devon Leiferman and Latrell Terkildsen moved on and SDSU bound, Krockett Krowlikowski is skipping basketball to get ready for the NEXT level.

Those are some huge graduation losses, but Winner had bigger graduation losses the year before and they still made it back to the dance. The Warriors are always there at the end, and while you might get em early, by late February, this team will be there.

Drew DeMers and Cameron Kuil - Working on a piece about DeMers and the ridiculous assemblage of QB talent the DeMers name has produced. Late last season, DeMers really emerged as a scoring threat to take some pressure off Leiferman. Drew ran Dan Aaker's ridiculously complicated offense to perfection and find no reason to think he won't take it to another gear this level.  Looking for Cameron Kuil to become more of a scorer this season, play terrific defense and be a real integral cog in what Winner is trying to do.

Luke Engel and Trevor Bertram - Both good ball handlers, both team guys, but both really good. Bertram came on late in the season for Winner, shot the three well and I expect him to take a significant leap forward in all areas.

Isaac Naasz - Always kind of a threat off the bench...Team guy, but, with the departure of some of those big guys, Naasz will be counted on to do more. He's long, plays defense, has a good stroke from deep and really feel like he'll be an interesting guy for Winner.

So, who mans the middle: Heard Wyatt Ewing wasn't going out, but see he's on the roster.

Chase Kingsbury will give everything!

Thinking Brandon Vollmer will step forward and do I see two freshman, Joren Brunn and Philip Jorgenson on the roster?

Winner lost a lot in the middle, but they have a lot of tough, forward type players that are going to make this team tick.
